World Children’s Day 2025: Providing psychological support to Ukrainian children

War has raged in Ukraine for over three years, fundamentally changing the lives of millions of children. An entire generation is growing up with sirens, air raids, flight and constant fear as part of their everyday life. Their carefree nature, their security and their childhood are being taken away from them every day.
On World Children’s Day 2025, the aid organisation #WeAreAllUkrainians is highlighting the severe psychological impact of the war on children. At the heart of the campaign is an impressive film in which a child’s face appears against a black background while news reports from the war in Ukraine can be heard. The face gradually ages until it is covered in wrinkles. The message is clear: childhood ends when war begins. To protect the children, the image was created entirely with the help of artificial intelligence.
Early psychological support is crucial in preventing long-term psychological damage. For this reason, #WeAreAllUkrainians has developed various support services with a low threshold of access, based on scientific findings, which are intended to reach children in all regions of Ukraine. These include an AI-supported chatbot that responds to queries related to stress or anxiety and offers age-appropriate breathing and calming exercises, as well as playful stabilisation methods. This is a first step before children can actively seek help. In addition, a partnership with the organisation Krisenchat enables children to contact Ukrainian-speaking psychologists anonymously and regardless of location via messenger. A third support measure involves personal one-to-one care from psychologists in existing centres in Ukraine, where children can receive therapeutic care in a safe environment.
Siemens Caring Hands e.V. supports the #WeAreAllUkrainians initiative, which provides psychological support to children and families in Ukraine. The initiative aims to provide children in need with support, security and new perspectives.
20 September is World Children’s Day. It reminds us of the importance of focusing on the protection, rights and needs of children. It is especially important not to ignore their voices in times of war.
