Hope on Wheels: Mobile kitchens in Ukraine
Amidst the ongoing conflict, we continue to devote our hearts and hands to helping those who suffer daily from the consequences of Russia’s war.
In Ukraine’s war-torn regions, we support vital projects that bring hope and warmth to those affected. One particularly moving project from our 2024/25 winter relief effort was the launch of a unique food truck in January 2025. This mobile kitchen bravely travels to areas where bomb alerts and destruction make stationary supplies impossible.
Four stationary kitchens were set up in April 2025 in regions that were particularly hard hit by the war, including the heavily destroyed cities of Kherson, Kharkiv, Sumy and Chernihiv.
This was a vital survival provision, especially during the freezing winter months. With temperatures well below freezing and frequent power cuts, a hot meal provided vital warmth and nutrients for the body, as well as nourishment. In many areas, cooking facilities were unavailable due to damaged infrastructure and closed supermarkets, leaving supplies depleted. Mobile and stationary kitchens were often the only way for older people, families with small children and people with limited mobility to obtain a hot meal.
At a time when bitter cold and complicated supply issues are part of everyday life, we reached 72,090 people, including those holding out in contested frontline areas or recently liberated locations. By distributing 358,356 warm meals, we satisfied hunger and gave hope. Thanks to our excellent collaboration with local volunteers and the sensible use of food surpluses, we were able to distribute supplies efficiently despite the dangerous war situation.
This life-saving initiative was made possible through the collaboration of Tafel Deutschland e.V., the European Food Banks Federation, and the Ukrainian Food Banks Federation.
