STEM-Education für Innovation
To ensure access to education and enable equal opportunities for learning even in times of Covid-19, Siemens Caring Hands supports the Siemens Stiftung in developing innovative educational content for teachers as well as students in Latin America, thus promoting STEM education.
The Covid-19 pandemic has presented us with new challenges around the world and, unlike any other crisis before, it has demonstrated the need for innovative teaching methods and new approaches to schooling. In Latin America alone, 160 million students are affected by school closures, according to UNESCO.
Access to education, and particularly STEM education, is essential, especially in times like these: (STEM) knowledge enables society to meet the challenges of our time with creative solutions and serves as a basis for the development of problem-solving competencies and resilience.
Therefore, the Siemens Stiftung, together with its partners in Latin America, is launching the “STEM Education for Innovation” initiative, which is supported by the COVID-19 relief fund of Siemens Caring Hands with 500,000 euros. Within a year, this will set the course for 14 projects on the South American continent, in which new, digital educational formats and content will be designed, developed, and distributed. Thematically, the projects focus on science, technology, sustainability, climate change, health, and digitalization.
The educational initiative of the Siemens Stiftung combines:
- openly-licensed (OER –Open Educational Resources) digital and analogue teaching materials for the entire education chain (teachers, students of all age groups)
- blended learning concepts
- certification and advanced training for teachers
- regional workshops
- experimental teaching
- a cooperative network for teachers, universities, and education institutions.
Each of the initiative’s individual projects is operated locally and adds value to local education systems. The local needs in each region are met through close consultation with regional education experts and authorities. At the same time, all materials, formats and concepts developed can be easily adapted and made available for other Latin American regions.
Im Rahmen der Initiative arbeitet die Siemens Stiftung auch mit der UNESCO zusammen. Diese hat sich mit ihrer Global Education Coalition zum Ziel gesetzt, Länder dabei zu unterstützen, Ressourcen zu mobilisieren und passende Lösungen zu finden, um Lernenden und Lehrenden in Zeiten von COVID-19 eine Chance auf Bildung zu ermöglichen – remote und auf die jeweiligen digitalen Möglichkeiten zugeschnitten.
MINT-Bildung ist eine Kernkompetenz der Siemens Stiftung. Mit der neuen Bildungsinitiative reagiert die Stiftung einerseits auf die aktuellen Anfragen lateinamerikanischer Bildungsministerien bezüglich digitaler Schulungsinhalte und -formate im Angesicht einer globalen Pandemie. Andererseits unterstützt sie damit auch die nachhaltige und langfristige Verbesserung von MINT-Bildung in Lateinamerika und hilft dabei, Bildungsinhalte zukunftsfähig und für alle frei zugänglich zu machen sowie gleichberechtigtes Lernen zu ermöglichen.
